End of Career – Cosmos

I had one month remaining on my contract and had no desire to renew it. I felt I had done all I could at Jomo Cosmos and that it was time to move on. It was better to do that sooner rather than later so the club could find a replacement with minimal disruption.

Jomo Cosmos

Career History

I joined Jomo Cosmos in June 2016 with the mandate to consolidate the club as a force in the league. What occurred in the first season was a perfect storm of the team performing above expectations, and the usually dominant Kaizer Chiefs having a poor year by their standards.

Realistically I was expecting to pick up a cup win this season as we began to build the backbone of the squad. In the end we finished top of the pile with 64 points which represented a good haul. If came down to the wire, and we got over the finish line on the final day of the season.

We also collected the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a very tense final match. This gave me two trophies in my first year in charge.

Key players signed : Nogi, Duarte, Kangila

Following the experiences of the last season I was quietly optimistic that we could deliver a good showing. Our results were down slightly from the year before and we had trouble finding the back of the net. A loss on the last day saw us slip down to third place.

We picked up the MTN 8 Cup and qualified for the group stage of the CAF Champions League, so the year was not a total waste. We strengthened the squad in the January window although this strengthening didn’t bring any immediate results for us.

Key players signed : Luthuli, Lubasa, Zech, Radzi, Grigorjevs, Lavet, Muhimpunu

Key players signed : Ali, Asante, Maieco

The team really gelled as we won the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, and the ASBA Premiership with a record points total. Following this season I decided that I had done all that I wanted at the club and it was time to move on. I feel I have built a phenomenal side that with the right leadership should be well placed for a number of years to come.

Where to now?

I would have liked to take the position in the A-League, however they decided that they didn’t want to wait for me. The offer from BATE Borisov is still out there and should they decide that they want me to come manage them I will probably say yes.
