35: Third Placed Finish

30 June 2018
Tembisa, South Africa

We qualified for the group stage of the CAF Champions League which was pleasing. We slipped down the ladder to finish third in the league which was disappointing. All things considered a good year.

Blow by Blow

CAF Champions League 2nd Round Leg 2

This is it – a game for all the marbles! Win this and we are through to the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

We have all three first choice midfield players out suspended and, just for shits and giggles, Radzi is off gallivanting across the world on international duty.

This is going to be a tough match. We were unable to score in the first match despite controlling the game. A goal draw would be enough given we were away following the 0-0 result at home. For the second game in a row we went to extra time, and it looked like we were headed to penalties. Almost out of nowhere, Hilali Muhimpundu found space inside the area and drive a low shot into the bottom corner to win it for us.

Our team was almost out on their feet, but that didn’t stop them celebrating after the match!

CAF Champions League Groups Drawn

We have landed in Group A, being drawn against the defending Champions USM Alger from Algeria. We also face A.S. Vita Club from the Republic of Congo, and Egyptian club Zamalek Sporting Club. Now I have no idea where we rank in terms of strength, but I am sure I will find out!

Job Interview

With us having qualified for the Champions League, all jobs are off the menu. Of course it doesn’t stop them asking! FC Minsk was an interesting offer. Close, but no cigar!

Match 29/30 – ABSA Premiership

Platinum Stars are up next. They haven’t been playing well of late which means if we play well we should be able to prevail.

Two wins should see us finish second which adds a little extra spice to the match as both sides have it all to play for.

Radzi is the only first choice player unavailable, and I believe we have fielded a very strong line-up.

Two first-half goals to Eduards Grigorjevs was enough for us to retain second spot. We were good throughout and picked up a deserved win.

Solid performances all round saw us pick up some nice overall ratings.

Injury Report

Disappointed to lose Tseka for the last game of the year due to food poisoning! Bah Humbug!!

Match 30/30 – ABSA Premiership

Final game of the season facing a 3-5-2 formation which has given us some troubles this season.

Favourites again we have it all to play for. A win should be enough to secure us second place, unless SuperSport United score 8 more goals than we do.

I am giving Zech a start at DM in the only change we make. I want to develop him as my backup for Tseka in that role, as Rikotso is not coming back next season.

Ugh. We just couldn’t get the job done. A header from a corner was enough to consign us to a thrid place finish.

Once again our inability to finish cost us. On the whole we played well, we just didn’t take our chances.

Cosmos Qualify for CAF Confederation Cup

Not where I wanted to be… but it’s not all  that bad.

Match Summary

It always seems to be that final result that spoils a good month!

League Table

Final standings are in. Overall I am happy with the performances this season.

End of Season Review

Good to see that the board think I am doing well!

Can’t complain about this selection. All players featured deserved their spots. Radzi played most of his games at AMR but drops back to central midfield to accommodate Nene.
