34: No Repeat This Season

11 May 2018
Tembisa, South Africa

We are unable to repeat as Nedbank Cup winners after going out in the semifinal on penalties. Once again the Kaiser Chiefs were too strong, although we had our chances and nearly won it in stoppage time.

Blow by Blow

Nedbank Cup Quarter Final

Black Leopards are sitting just above the relegation spots, and stand between us and back to back semi-final appearances. We have to play them twice in succession.

Nogi is suspended having picked up five yellow cards. There is some rotation due to fixture congestion however I feel confident in the team I have at my disposal.

Opening 15 mins was mostly Black Leopards although we have started gaining control of possession. Grigorjevs combined with Lavet, setting up the striker to open the scoring. 1-0 Cosmos. A penalty awarded just before the half allowed Duarte to double our lead as half-time arrived.

Second half opens and Black Leopards come out swinging. Shots at either end without any change to the score. Fresh legs for us as we seek to close out the game. Black Leopards pull a goal back with four to play. We hold onto the ball for the last 2.5 minutes to guarantee us the win!

Hardly a vintage performance, but we will take the win.

Nedbank Cup Semi-Final Draw

We couldn’t have gotten a tougher opponent. I feel whoever wins this match will win the Cup.

Match 27/30 – ABSA Premiership

Another game against the Black Leopards. The showed how tough the could be last game so we will have our work cut out.

Nogi is back from suspension. Lavet gets a chance to impress again, as does Muhimpundu.

We start very well and have 79% of possession in first 10 mins. Duarte releases Grigorjevs who finishes with aplomb. 1-0 Cosmos.Lubasa heads home a corner and we are 2-0 up before the first 15 minutes are up. Lavet still can not direct headers goalwards. We secure a penalty and Tseka makes no mistake. 3-0 Cosmos.Grigorjevs finds the net again but was offside. 3-0 at half-time and in control.

More of the same in the second half. We control the ball, but are not putting away the chances. To be fair the opposition keeper is having a great game. In the end we don’t score again, but nor do they.

A solid game where Radzi picked up the POM award. I am happy with how the team is starting to gel.

CAF Champions League 2nd Round Leg 1

This time for all the marbles. Not much to go on here either as they haven’t a long history in the game.

Makaringe and Ngcobo come back in to the starting line-up. Lavet retains the starting berth as he has been looking good these last few games. Lubasa Edges out Motaung and partners Nogi at the back.

We are at home so keeping a clean sheet is important. First chance comes via a goal line scramble but we can’t find the net. It’s been a tense first half where we have had the better chances.

We were not good enough in the second half either. The game was a scrappy affair where neither side were able to threaten. About the only saving grace is that we didn’t concede.

No real highlights here so the average ratings were low across the board.

Player Suspensions

This will have a big bearing on the next match and may put us in the hole. To be missing all three of your midfield players would make any team struggle.

Match 28/30 – ABSA Premiership

This game is potentially a decider for second place. If we can win this we steal a march on them.

Two changes for this match with Nene replacing Lavet and Mataung in for Lubasa.

We start the game strongly and have controlled possession but could not create that final chance. Makaringe had the best chance but hits his shot straight at the keeper.

Second half was much of the same. Neither team created much until we failed to defend a corner and went behind. Game over!

We didn’t play badly – we just didn’t play well. Oh well. It is what it is.

Kaiser Chiefs win the league.

Not unexpected as they were the best and most consistent team this season. According to my assistant, with only 2 games to go, the lowest we can end up is now 4th.

Job Interview

Just getting my hand in. Not sure if I want this job!

Nedbank Cup Semi Final

Kaizer Chiefs are the first team I have seen that are ambidextrous – equal assists from both flanks. Will be a tough game.

Radzi has swanned off on international duty and Ngcobe is suspended. Other than that there are no changes.

First half we had more of the game but we have not been clinical enough in front of goal. Much improvement needed for the second half.

0-0 at full time. We were the better side for most of the game. We went to sleep from the kick off in extra time and paid the price. Levelled it up well and then struck the bar in the last minute but couldn’t get the winner. Penalties are a lottery – we played and lost.

So we are out of the cup. I feel like we were the better team for large parts of the game, however we were not better in front of goal which is where games are decided.

Match Summary

An OK performance for us this month with the only blemish being the late loss to SuperSport United.

League Table

Kaiser Chiefs have won the league. Good on them, because they really have kicked arse this season.

Next Episode

Next game is the CAF Champions League. This game for all the marbles! It is followed by the last two matches of the League, where two wins will see us finish second.
