Goyang, South Korea
It seems wise to start the new season with a bad pun. In accordance with the rules of engagement I applied for the first job which was available in either Asia or Africa. That job was with Korean second division team Goyang Hi F.C.
The Korean Second Division, or K-League Challenge is a 10 team league running from January to November. Each team plays the other teams five times for a total of 45 games in a season. The winner is promoted, and the runner up has a promotion relegation play-off with the second bottom team in the First Division. There is no relegation.
Goyang Hi F.C. is currently 9th in the division despite being predicted to finish 6th. As you can see they have won a couple of titles but nothing recently.
Looking at my first team squad the first thing that jumps out is the number of players – the first team has 31 members in the squad! We are spending £5.67K per week over budget. As the wage bill is &Pound;14.43K, we are almost over 150% of our budget. Adding all of my reserve players to the mix we have 41 players all earning money at our expense. This has to change.
As I said before we are 9th out of 10 teams and have a lot of work to do to improve.
On the plus side we have quite a few games to go so improvement is possible.
Our first five games are all against bottom half teams. I will play these games and then assess where we stand.
Ideally we want three wins out of the five games with perhaps ten points.
Where to next?
I have a game on my first day in charge. I will implement my tactics and trust my assistant to select the team. I suspect that it will take a few weeks to bed in the team, so I will look to schedule my next update following the game against Bucheon 1995.
