It’s that wonderful time of year, where we get to play Champions League football. As a bonus we have already won the league, so we only have one thing to worry about, and are able to rest our first team players.
We have had a bad run with injuries however I am hoping that the worst is behind us on that front. We also lost our unbeaten record, losing to the Melbourne Victory. Be that as it may we are still in a good position overall.
Blow by Blow
“The Count” has overtaken “The Major” in appearances, and is in a position to push the horizon even further.
AFC Champions League – Match 1/6
Fairly even odds although I feel that this game will be more of a test. “Dobbie” and “Trickles will be big misses.
Close to a full strength team as I can field. “Gopher” is in for “Dobbie, and “The Count” in for “Trickles”
We turned in a good performance where we took our chances while they didn’t. I think the final score flattered us , but I’ll take it.
Yellow cards could be an issue for us. We need to tone down the challenges.
Hyundai A-League – Match 21/27
Once more against the Roar! They have us installed as favourites again, and I am happy to try to oblige them with a win.
“Scruffy” is back from injury and will be getting a minimum of 60 minutes today. We also have a rare start for “Cone Head” and “Thurts”. “The Major” gets a game as well.
This game wasn’t one of our best efforts. We didn’t really dominate and in the end were somewhat lucky to escape with a draw. The wors part was the loss of three players through injury.
Bruised Ribs for “The Count” will see him in doubt for the next Champions League game.
Same applies for “Gopher”, which is a real concern.
The worst injury was to “Vugee” who is effectively out for the season. This is a blow as he was starting to develop nicely.
Hyundai A-League – Match 22/27
What a difference a year makes! This time last year the Victory were propping up the league. Now they languish at the bottom.
Another fairly heavily rotated line-up. Only three who will be starting in the next match though.
Simply put “The Axe” had a shocker. Two mistakes which lead to goal, and a 4.6 rating. This is not the first time that he has performed poorly and he is on the chopping block for sure.
AFC Champions League – Match 2/6
Match two of the champions league against “Mr Li”‘s old team Shandong Lenung. The media expects us to struggle. Certainly it will be a battle but I have confidence in our ability.
I have both “Dobbie” and “Trickles” back from injury. They are not match fit, but I hope to be able to get 60 minutes from the pair, and that that should be enough. I field the strongest team I can, as the win is important to us.
In the end it turned out to be every bit of a struggle as I expected. To be fair, on another day we would have won by three or four goals. Today it took a moment of brilliance from “Mr Li” to find “Dobbie” with a fine ball for the games only goal.
Our first loss of the season came against our nemesis Melbourne Victory. They have consistently been the hardest team to beat.
Neck and neck with Chunnam in group E. THe next match will decide who stays top.
Not much interest here. Still 20 points clear of Adelaide with five games to play. These five games represents a chance for my backup players to get some game time in the first team.
We have a tough four days with second placed Adelaide followed by Chunnam. While I would like to win the Adelaide match, I am not sure that will be possible.
