37: Top of the group, top of the league

28 September 2018
Tembisa, South Africa

It has been a very good month since the last update. Five games for five wins, and into the Champions League Semifinal. All things considered a good series of results.

Blow by Blow

CAF Champions League Group A Match 4/6

These guys were tough nuts to crack last time out. If the line up 4-4-2 I am confident, however the 5-3-2 is a tougher nut to crack.

A reasonable strong first team, but the bench is looking a little thin.

We need to put in a much better performance than we did last time out. The loss of Tseka at Regista is a big miss as he was really growing into the position.

Tallented Youngster Ngobeni became hero with two late goals that snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. We were lucky to be level at the half as Zamalek looked to be much more dangerous. When they scored I feared the worst and turned to the Ngobeni on the bench. What a time to score his first two goals for the club!

The stats were flattering us as they were the better side for 65 minutes. Luckily their efforts fell away and we were able to emerge victors.

We qualify from the group stages on the back of this result. Very pleasing indeed!

Injury Report

Grigorjevs has been performing very well for us and to lose him now is annoying. Still we have plenty of cover available in his position so it is not the end of the world.

Nogi Suspended

We had 9 players one yellow card away from suspension in the champions league. Now there 8! That and injuries are what concerns me for the remaining 5 games.

Telkom Knockout Draw

We draw Wits in the first round. This is the last trophy domestically I have not yet won. As such it is my second focus for this season.

Injury Report

The injury situation in the midfield is starting to become a little worrying. We were short one player anyhow, Makaringe is a very key member of the squad.

CAF Champions League Group A Match 5/6

It would be nice to carry on the winning ways here. These guys were not a real threat last time out so am confident.

Motaung comes in for the suspended Nogi, while Majola gets his first start of the season covering for injured Grigorjevs. 16 year old Twala gets on the bench for the first time and may even get some minutes.

I am not sure I like the sound of Stade des Martyrs! Doesn’t sound like a fun place to play.

Not a vintage performance, however one I am happy with. We created a few chances, and just failed to take them. We limited them to just one shot which is pleasing.

As far as the stats go we looked in control. Their chance was a good one and they really should have had a goal.

Match 3/30 – ABSA Premiership

Tuks come to visit next. We may have to field a rotated site due to a shortage of bodies in the midfield.

As predicted we had made wholesale changes to the team. It is not a strong team but is the best I have available. Asante is making his début for the club, while young Twala is making his first start.

Twala had a good game, as did Ali and Ngobeni. Ngobeni may have taken a long time to bag his first goal for the club, however he has started to show the class I knew he possessed.

Having fielded a weaker squad I am very happy with how we dominated.

CAF Champions League Group A Match 6/6

Last years champions have been a disappointment this season. If Zamalek lose and we lose USM Alger could still qualify so we need to keep our wits about us.

This team selected based on fitness alone. Still it is not a bad line-up. The bench is horrible but there is not much to say about that. Needs must!

We are slight underdogs, however I am confident in the lads ability.

Not perfect but effective! That makes 6 from 6. Majola picked up the player of the match award for a good game.

They put up a good fight, and were it not for some poor finishing they might have made more of a game of it.

Another youngster gets some game time off the bench.

New Team Record

Twelve wins in a row! Not too bad, although that is not strictly true as it includes the loss on penalties in the MTN 8 Semi Final.

Champions League Semifinal Draw

Match 4/30 – ABSA Premiership

Newly promoted Thanda Royal Zulu have been finding that having a really cool logo does not guarantee wins. The fact that we face SuperSport United three days immediately after this match means I may be fielding a slightly weaker side than I might like.

In the end the fitness levels were quite good and I am happy to choose a reasonably strong side. Grigorjevs is making a return from injury.

We are favourites here, and I would be disappointed to not take all 3 points on offer today.

We came out of the traps on fire and were 3-0 up after 20 mins. After that start, the game was all over!

We didn’t do as good a job of possession retention, however we were very solid and it is hard to find fault.

Match Summary

A good series of results. I am happy with how we have been performing. The Zamalek result was the only match that was close.

League Table

Sitting pretty atop the pile, although to be fair we have not yet played any top sides in the league.

Champions League Group

Qualified top of the group. Zamalek were the toughest opponents and deserved to also qualify.
