Las Piedras, Uruguay
The best laid plans of mice and men… The promise on show survived until the kickoff of the first game. We just couldn’t find the goal often enough, and didn’t display enough composure on the ball to take our chances.
Blow by Blow
I think my starting tactics may have been a mistake against Cerrito. I knew they were going to come to play and went with my standard formation. We gave up an early goal and were always going to struggle. Against Deportivo I went with my new double DM tactic and picked up a draw.
We carried it on and Canadian and logged our first win. The Canadian win owed a lot to goalkeeper Maximiliano Silva who pulled off a series of one on one saves to bail out the defense and preserve our. Sadly we lost young Alejandro Acosta for seven months with a broken leg.
Against league leaders El Tanque Sisley we held on for 54 minutes before conceding the goal. They deserved the goal and we were not clinical enough in front of the goal. Positives for sure, but also a sign of how much work we need to do.
A Worrying Slide
We really missed a march against Rampala Juniors. We started a little timidly and went behind just before halftime. We clawed the goal back immediately after the resumption, and the game was hard fought until a foolish red card tipped the balance. From the resulting free kick the Juniors scored the deciding goal.
Things did not improve against Torque, a match we had to win. We were abject, and were lucky to score zero. I am beginning to fear that there is no way back for the team. We did manage a creditable draw against Cerro Largo however that was not enough.
One win and two draws for a haul of only 5 out of 21 points. This is enough for exactly last place. The team has 6 games to redeem itself.
Six matches to play in the season, most of which we need to win. The boards target was to finish at least 10th. At this stage I will settle for not last, because last means we are relegated out of the playable leagues and I will be sacked.
Not pretty reading!
We had one top prospect who could save us in the future, assuming that we have one!
